33.6kms approx, starting from the carpark.

This is a great ride to do, with many interesting spots along the way. Check out the different dams and if you've packed a lunch, there's plenty of spots to stop for a picnic. The weather can change quickly, so take a jacket and layered clothing. It is suited to riders of all fitness levels. As it is a there and back ride, you can decide how far in you want to go.

Getting there:

Heading South from Palmerston North, go over the Fitzherbert Bridge, stay to the right and follow the signs to Linton, Tokomaru and then onto Shannon along State highway 57. Take your first left at Shannon onto Stafford St, follow this to East St on the left and continue down here onto Mangahao Rd. You can park at the car park by the reserve near the Powerhouse. Lock away all valuables and parking is at owners' risk.

Starting this ride at the car park, ride up past the Power House at Mangaore, up Mangahao road to a series of Hydro Dams in the Tararua foothills behind Shannon. From the Power House, start off climbing up Mangahao Rd for about 4km to reach the saddle (400m high) and descend to the Lower No3 Dam. This is a great spot to stop and take some photos of the spectacular views. Continue along the road beside the dam before you start climbing up and over the hill to get to the Middle No2 Dam. Once again you ride along the side of the dam until you reach the Upper No1 Dam. Stop here for a rest and maybe a picnic, before retracing your path back to the Power House.

Things to do and see:

Heading out through Tokomaru, turn left onto Tokomaru East Road and head down to the Horse Shoe Bend Picnic Reserve, a great spot for swimming and exploring. Out here you can also visit The Bent Horseshoe Cafe for great coffee, tasty food and spectacular river views. Sit on the spacious deck in summer, or cosy up by the roaring fire in winter. Back on the Main Road, pop in to Tokomaru Steam Engine Museum.

Through Shannon, there are some lovely cafes, such as the Olde Plum Duff Cafe. For accommodation, a meal or cold drinks, visit the Albion Tavern or Plimmer Terrace. The local Four Square has all your grocery needs as well as coffee, fresh food to go and a great range of beer & wine to take on that picnic.
