TAKE A MID-WINTER DRIVE TO THE NORTHERN MANAWATU

Why not take a drive one weekend up to the Northern Manawatu. Pick a sunny a day and enjoy some stunning views including the snow-capped Ruahines and Ruahepu.  Travel up to Kimbolton, enjoy lunch or a coffee at Hansen's Cafe in Kimbolton and continue through to Rangiwahia and back to Kimbolton via Apiti. The views are fabulous and I have attached a few photos as examples, including a sunrise, Ruapehu from Peep-o-Day Lookout and some taken from the Te Parapara-Renfrew-Main South Road Junction. Sorry to say Main South Road is not yet sealed, but read below for an update. Good things take time!

Campervans are still making use of the Campervan Site next to The Rangiwahia Hall. We are also working with DOC to open up some of the run-down walks around Rangiwahia such as the Rangiwahia Bush and The Ruahine Dress Circle down Kelpie Road off Ruahine Road. DOC is also going to improve the carpark at the start of the Rangiwahia Track. They are also putting out tenders to improve the track up and around the huge slip on the track. Unfortunately it is not possible to form a track over the slip. So watch this space!

The first photo of the slip is taken from a helicopter. You can see the wooden bridge in the foreground. The track now goes up and around the slip adding about 30 minutes to the walk. The 2nd photo is taken while on the track.

We have also an update on the Main South Road sealing project. Last week a double power pole was shifted back about 15 meters at the top of the Mangoira Gorge, where there is a nasty sharp corner. By moving the poles it will enable contractors to take off the corner making it much safer. Work on the first 4 kms should commence in a few months, with sealing being completed by the end of 2012. The final 4 kms will then be prepared & sealed in 2013. Once the work starts I will be posting some photos!

By the way, Steve managed to be in the right place, at the right time one afternoon when a kingfisher hit the window and stood motionless for several minutes giving enough time for him to take several photos before it flew off. He was very pleased to get these as they are extremely difficult birds to photograph.

So do enjoy the photos.

I live in Rangiwahia with my husband Steve. We have 3 sons and 5 grandchildren.  We sold our farm in 2007 and now have a very small Texel sheep stud. This has enabled has to branch out and spend more time promoting the northern Manawatu. We have been working with Destination Manawatu and DOC to promote our beautiful area and I have built a website called www.irongates.co.nz which is full of information.

We love taking photos and over the past couple of years have taken hundreds around what is now called The Iron Gates Experience, part of The Country Road.

I have taken heaps of bird photos and found this both rewarding and challenging, as so many of our native/endemic birds are difficult to spot let alone photgraph.

I have been working as a part-time practice nurse in Feilding for the past 17 years. I enjoy gardening, cooking, tramping, and singing. I have a MacBook computer on which I have learnt to build 2 websites and created DVDs from Steve’s video footage.
