Stormy Point Route is a brilliant alternative to getting to Feilding, and Palmerston North away from State Highway 1. Instead of heading straight through on the main highway, why not take the scenic route? It won’t delay your travels – unless you choose to stop at one of the many interesting places you’ll see along the way! Best of all, you’ll avoid the traffic.
Named ‘Stormy Point Route’ after the Stormy Point lookout, the views are phenomenal, stretching as far as Mt Egmont and Mt Ruapehu. You’ll also see one of the best preserved sequences of river terraces in the world.

Driving Instructions:
Going South: At the intersection of SH 1 and SH 54, you will need to turn left onto Vinegar Hill Road (SH 54), and follow this right through to Cheltenham. At Cheltenham, turn Right onto Kimbolton Road and follow this through to Feilding.
Going North: Starting at Feilding, head out on Kimbolton Road, and follow this through to Cheltenham. At Cheltenham, turn left onto Cheltenham-Hunterville Road and follow this up through Waituna West and Rewa. This road will become Vinegar Hill Road, and will eventually take you out onto SH 1. From here, you can turn left to go to Hunterville, or turn right to head up to Mangaweka.
NB: Stormy Point Route is predominately on State Highway 54. As with all the touring routes, it can be as short or long as you make it. Make the most of being in the country, enjoy the scenery, visit the picnic spots and explore the road side stalls and attractions.
