What is The Country Road

The Country Road is a part of New Zealand that you’ll never be able to experience on a tourist bus. Set in rural Manawatu it takes you on journeys between the highways through rural landscapes. Here you are encouraged to ‘get lost’ in the nicest way and go off and explore country lanes, dine with locals at country pubs, hike through native bush covered ranges to remote huts, and all the while enjoying world-class scenery from the roadside. It's relaxing, challenging, exciting, invigorating and more, so you can plan your holiday or visit on The Country Road exactly the way you want it to be.

At the heart of The Country Road is the township of Feilding. Visit this peaceful town and you'll soon see why it has won the award of 'NZ's most Beautiful Town', not once, but fourteen times. With no traffic lights, free parking and paved streets, this town proudly displays its rich Edwardian heritage, and strong rural connections. With a wide range of boutique shops, Feilding is well known as a shopping destination. The cafe's and eateries are plentiful, with something to match all tastes.  There are many reasons to visit Feilding, all waiting to be discovered by you.

Tips & Tricks for travelling The Country Road

  • Have you filled up your petrol tank? If not, make sure you do before you set off on your journey. Petrol stations can be found in Palmerston North, Feilding, Ashhurst, Woodville, Marton, Hunterville, Taihape and Bulls.
  • Most of the touring routes are on rural roads. This means that you need to be mindful of farm vehicles, stock being moved (sheep, cattle etc) as well as cyclists.
  • Some of the side roads off the main routes are unsealed. If you are in a rental car or campervan, this may not be allowed due to insurance restrictions by the rental vehicles company. It pays to check first.
  • Always take some loose change with you as there are many road side stalls, selling all sorts like fresh flowers, vegetables, eggs, fruit and nuts. Please be sure to use the honesty boxes provided.
  • Not all operators have eftpos or credit card facilities so it pays to take cash with you as well.
  • Travelling with a camera is a must; make sure your battery is fully charged. You won’t want to miss out on the amazing photographic opportunities as you travel!
  • Lost? Ask one of the friendly locals to assist you, and always travel with your map of The Country Road.
  • Plan your trip. If you are wanting accommodation, make sure you book ahead. Likewise with visiting some of the attractions. Some places are seasonal, open by appointment only, or have limited hours so it pays to check ahead.
