Paul Vandenberg

I have lived in Palmerston North my entire life, born in Palmy in 1964 and have a passion for our flora and fauna. married for 20 years with two teenage daughters, help...
My working life has evolved around the heavy transport industry, but I would prefer to be working with people and nature, so this is where my other passion for wild life photography has taken off and I just love sharing my images with people, where I get a real buzz when people not only like them, but learn something new from my photo's. I go tramping, hiking at every opportunity and have led and joined many trips into some of our stunning bush walks.
My current goals are to be more active with people and improving awareness of the beautiful Manawatu, I am also in the process of enhancing one of our parks with dedicated plantings to attract butterflies for all to see and study. also would like to see more people enjoy my photography where I am always looking for ways to better myself to get that wow factor from my work.

Beehive Creek

Set in the very picturesque Pohangina valley is a walk called Beehive Creek, a stunning walk that weaves along a creek surrounded by nature.

The Majestic Monarchs

Butterflies, we all know what one is, but do we know what butterflies we have in this beautiful country we call New Zealand?

Holiday Season

What to write about in the holiday season, when many of us travel to check someone else’s location, or just to get away, but do we just get away from the rat race or do we just enter someone else’s rat race?

My solution to getting out is exploring the bush, checking out the flora & fauna, yes I do visit other areas as there is always something different to check out, something unusual that we don’t have, but coming home is always a buzz, that feeling that you belong, the familiarity of your home, your own garden or your pets, sometimes we need familiarity to relax.

Victoria Esplanade Is A Jewel

The Victoria Esplanade a jewel in Palmerston North’s crown.

Most have visited it but have we actually spent some real time exploring this park we call the Victoria Esplanade?

I consider myself very lucky having grown up on Fitzherbert Avenue and the Victoria Esplanade was my back yard, no computers or cell phone, just a huge park to explore and play in.

Take your 'Time' at Bushy Park

Like this blog, good things take time and Bushy Park is testament to this.

The Sledge Track

The Sledge Track is still quite new in the scheme of things as far as walks go, and this would be one of our tracks that are well known to local trampers, but still little known by many.

Kitchener Park

There are parks and there are parks, some so spectacular you just need to return again and again.

Just on the outskirts of Feilding, Kitchener Park is one of these special places. It has had a rough time with flooding in 2004 that did a huge amount of damage, but also created a huge amount of interest. There have been many working bees with hundreds of new trees planted over the years, but the park still retains plenty of its old character.

Whiteheads in Turitea

As a photographer with an interest in our native birds there is one bird in particular that is not well known to the average person and many would probably not see, unless being very observant, is the Whitehead. Apart from the obvious, they have a mostly white head and are endemic to New Zealand. Trying to photograph a Whitehead can be frustrating as they move in small flocks from tree to tree.
