Apollo Park
Apollo Park is a community park and children's playground in the suburb of Milson in Palmerston North City. A special feature of the park is the butterfly shaped garden, which was created by local volunteers to attract more butterflies, which have been seen to overwinter in the park.
Milson Guides have been involved with the butterfly park since it started and regularly visit to count butterfly numbers.
Other key people involved in the butterfly park are Paul Vandenberg, who has come up with the ideas, rallied the community together and keeps the momentum going to evolve the park. Part of this includes community working bees with home baking and refreshments supplied by the volunteers, including Paul's extended family. Tony Strange maintains the lawns, and Terry from Manawatu Native Plant Nursery has supplied native plants, and has done a lot of work pruning, and spraying. So many people go unmentioned in projects like this because they're sthy or because their help has been fleeting. But, all are much appreciated, including the friendly neighbours who have watered establishing plants during the heat of summer.
So, take the family and a picnic and visit Monarchs in Apollo Park. If you're lucky you'll see some butterflies or caterpillars. The gardens are all native and little by little will grow and attract more butterfly and caterpillar species to the area. For the little ones there is a playground, and there is a dairy next door.
