The Papaioea Trio are back at the Globe Theatre, featuring Elizabeth Patchett – violin, Robert Ibell – cell and Guy Donaldson – piano. Elizabeth is a violinist in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Robert was formerly a member of that orchestra but now focuses on chamber music, including this trio and Guy Donaldson is well-known in the Manawatu as a pianist, teacher, coach and the convenor of the Globe Sunday Matinee Series.
This year’s concert begins with a dynamic piece by Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, CalliopeDreaming, written in 2009 as her commissioned contribution to a Haydn Festival, and displaying Haydnesque wit in her evocation of a Calliope – a keyboard instrument made up of steam whistles.
Haydn is a prolific writer of piano trios and the concert will feature his 45th such work, and one of his most mature.
The final piece is an arrangement of six of Tchaikowsky’s piano pieces appearing as The Seasons but expressing the special character of each month of the year. The tuneful numbers include some which have proved amongst Tchaikowsky’s most popular.
Admission is by koha, recommended from $10.
