Death Without Debt is a grassroots community organisation dedicated to changing the culture around dying. We want people to have more choice and to feel confident about caring for the bodies of their loved ones themselves and organising all arrangements and paperwork if they wish. DIY funerals are an act of love—and a way to avoid the huge funeral expenses that are devastating for some families.
Please attend if you work in support services assisting vulnerable families; if you wish to organise things to advance to reduce the stress on your family when you die; or if you want to prepare yourself ahead of time for when your family loses a loved one.
There are many myths and misunderstandings about who can do what when it comes to funerals and care of the dying. Empower yourself with the facts and make a plan so you can avoid unnecessary debt and are prepared to offer dignified, respectful and personal after-life care to those you love.
This is the first time Death Without Debt's workshop is being offered in Palmerston North. This workshop will cover:
- funeral planning, wills, Enduring Power of Attorney, Advanced Care Plans, probate
- after-death paperwork requirements and avoiding professional service fees
- care and transport of the body
- when you need a coffin and when you don’t
- the pros and cons of cremation vs burial plus alternative and environmental technologies
- the politics and history of funerals
- community initiatives and collective action for funeral reform
and much more.
Participants receive a detailed 64-page printed handbook for their reference.
We ask for a small contribution to assist with the costs of running this volunteer-led event and supporting the national campaign. We do not wish finances to be a barrier and you can attend by koha if necessary. Please visit the Death Without Debt website for more information and to register.
Bring your own lunch, we offer snacks, hot drinks and afternoon tea.
