In celebration of Lunar New Year 2025, Palmerston North City Council and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China are bringing a unique opportunity to experience a rare glimpse into the breathtaking treasures of the ancient Silk Road.
Dunhuang, located in north-western China, is an important historical and cultural city with a rich heritage, situated on the edge of the Gobi Desert at an important crossroads on the ancient Silk Road trading route. The name 'Dunhuang', means 'to flourish and prosper', giving an indication of the town's prominence in ancient China.
The art featured is from the Mogao Caves, one of China's most famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The complex consists of 492 Buddhist cave temples that were carved into the cliffs of the Mingsha Mountain over 1,000 years ago.
