Take part in Local History Week (1–10 March) and Heritage Month (1–31 March) - a time to celebrate and explore the rich history of Palmerston North and the Manawatū region.
Since its establishment in 2008, Local History Week has been an opportunity for our community to connect with the people, events, and influences that have shaped our city. This year, we celebrate the leaders, kaupapa, and organisations that have paved the way for our collective growth and identity as Palmerstonians. The whakatuakī (proverb), Hāpaitia te ara tika pūmau ai te rangatiratanga mō ngā uri whakatipu - fostering the pathway of knowledge for future generations - guides this year’s programme.
A variety of engaging events will be hosted at the Central Library and other venues across the city, including:
- Back Issues: Reflecting on key news moments and historical issues from Manawatū’s past.
- Exhibitions, Tours & Talks: Discover significant stories, places, and people.
- Workshops & Tutorials: Hands-on activities to bring history to life.
- Documentaries & Open Days: Showcasing historical footage and behind-the-scenes access.
The programme also includes special events focused on Rangitāne and Te Ao Māori, families, storytelling, industrial and transport history, and military history - ensuring something for everyone.
