Travelling by Motorhome in Manawatū

TRAVELLING BY MOTORHOME IN MANAWATŪ

Manawatū is a spectacular place to travel by motorhome. This little slice of kiwiana paradise packs in a lot to be loved on a road trip to the region, from epic rural eats, ancient forest treks to adventure activities to try – plus a huge dose of arts, fine dining, theatre and museums at the heart of the region in Palmerston North city.

All to be explored along easy-drive roads or from the base of one of the many scenic camping spots – Manawatū has all the motorhome infrastructure you’ll ever need for an awesome getaway.

When travelling by motorhome in Manawatū, the many scenic driving routes such as the three routes on The Country Road showcase different parts of the region – you’ll get a different flavour with each one, whether you’re looking for rugged backcountry wilderness and adventure activities or quaint country roads and gardens. Along the way you’ll find everything you need from dump stations and powered sites, to convenient places to park a large motorhome in town – head here for more information on the logistics of motorhoming in Manawatū.

When it comes to places to stay in with a motorhome in Manawatū, you’re spoilt for choice. You could stay at a remote river-rafting mecca of Awastone under the white cliffs (with its own licensed café), or at the friendly rural Āpiti Tavern with epic smoked BBQ and cold beer on tap. Parking up at the Himatangi Beach Holiday Park, you could end your day with fish and chips and a west coast beach sunset to remember, or spend a night at Totara Reserve campground with a walk to glowworms in lush native forest. To really take advantage of your self-contained motorhome, how about a night or two of freedom camping in one of the region’s many riverside reserves? We love the spacious Woodville Ferry Reserve and London’s Ford which also has a must-stop swimming spot.

During the days, break up the scenic driving with some of the many fabulous experiences you’ll come across. Horse trekking at high altitude is a peaceful and unique way to experience private backcountry, or for more adrenaline try out the rafting at Awastone on the Rangitikei. Stop at a farmers’ market for local seasonal produce for that night’s meal (Manawatū does some great artisan meats and organic veges), or pack a picnic for an afternoon relaxing at one of the regions many fabulous gardens open to the public. Go for a hike in Te Āpiti Manawatū Gorge, walk across the historic Mangaweka bridge, head to an iconic local theatre for the night: the choice is yours.

Manawatū makes for an exciting and memorable motorhoming trip – you’ll have everything you need from convenient infrastructure, to spectacular sights and adventures of all types, to peaceful places to stay. We hope to see you here soon!
