Te Marae o Hine - The Courtyard of the Daughter of Peace was intended by iwi and the borough of the time to be a place of peace and unity for all facets of Papaioea. As the city was beginning to take form, a space referred to as "The Flat", remained untouched at its centre. Rangitāne and kaumātua realised Māori needed a secure space for Māori customs to be preserved, and an area for all cultures to come together peacefully as a community.
