We bus out for 30 minutes to the Kahuterawa Valley Carpark. This loop walk is guided by members of the Hiking Manawatu Group.
The Sledge Track begins at the Kahuterawa car park at the end of Kahuterawa Road at 9.40ish. It's a beautiful bush walk alongside the stream with a small waterfall, swimming holes, swing bridge, and interesting rock formations on the way. The Toetoe and Platinum Mines Loop Tracks take you further to a number of old mine shafts with beautiful scenery along the way.
This 13km circular trail is generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 4 hours 34 minutes to complete. This trail is great for hiking, running, and walking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring.
Highlights include well-marked trails, great parking, and beautiful views. Challenges noted are muddy conditions, slips, and overgrown paths. Wearing sturdy footwear and correct clothing is essential. Gaiters is recommended. Hiking poles would be a good idea.
A packed lunch is included. Bookings are essential - no ticket sales on the day.
