The brand-new 10.5km Shared User Path (SUP) alongside the Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Tararua Highway offers a breathtaking journey across the Ruahine Ranges, designed for both walkers and cyclists to enjoy.
Enjoy panoramic views and unique perspectives across Manawatū, Tararua and beyond, including stunning vistas of the Ruahine and Tararua Ranges, the Manawatū River below, and nearby townships like Ashhurst and Woodville. Along the way, you'll also catch glimpses of Te Āpiti – Manawatū Gorge, and experience the giant-sized wind turbines towering overhead as you weave your way through the trail.
A standout feature is the lookout on Parahaki Bridge, suspended 30 metres above the Manawatū River. Located at the western end of the trail, it provides an unforgettable vantage point over Parahaki Island, the river corridor, and wider Gorge environment. The lookout includes mahi toi (artwork) and interpretive signage, enriching the journey with local stories and cultural insights.
While the SUP follows the highway corridor, it weaves away from the road at several points and even passes underneath the highway in places, offering a more immersive and varied experience. Multiple rest areas and lookouts along the route provide photo-worthy moments, or just a well-earned break from the occasional incline.
Loop option for hikers
For those on foot, the Shared User Path creates a 20km loop when combined with the existing Te Āpiti – Manawatū Gorge track, an ideal full-day challenge hikers looking to test their fitness and explore the region’s diverse terrain.
Plan your journey
While the path is suitable for a range of fitness levels, moderate to experienced fitness is recommended due to some steeper sections along the way.
