An unforgettable evening of storytelling from the coldest place on Earth. The New Zealand Antarctic Society is proud to invite you to a presentation by Maurie Bognuda and a curated selection of captivating short films from the heart of Antarctica.
The films blend stunning documentary footage, curated by award-winning filmmaker Anthony Powell, that reveals the continent’s stark beauty, unforgiving conditions, climate change, and penguin antics with stories captured by inventive and funny entries from the Winter International Film Festival of Antarctica’s 48-Hour Challenge, an annual showcase of creativity and resilience from those who winter-over on the Ice.
But before the films, we'll hear from Maurie Bognuda, who'll introduce you to Antarctica by way of his story as a Scout who leapt at the opportunity to go south to Antarctica in 1962, which was a fantastic experience for a 17-year-old! It included being returned to his home port a mile away from home, then getting called up the next day to meet the Prime Minister and do a radio interview. And a day after that, getting a fateful knock on the door with instructions to join the Antarctic Society - the experience kept getting better and better.
