For July 2026, on behalf of Arohanui Hospice, Zimmerman Art Gallery is pleased to present a fundraising exhibition of works by four late local artists - Basil Register, Jack Register, Brian Booth and Frank Davis.

Basil Register (1911-2002) is best known for his oil and watercolour paintings of New Zealand's coastal environments, rivers and historical landmarks. He was an elected member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, exhibiting regularly in Wellington with the Academy for several decades.

Jack Register QSM (1936-2018) – Basil’s son – was a warm personality who enjoyed engaging with people. When painting outdoors, he liked to chat with passersby – sometimes selling paintings to them, still wet, straight from his easel. In 2008, Jack was awarded a Queen's Service Medal for services to music and art.

Dr Brian Booth (1920-2012) served as a family GP in Palmerston North until his retirement at age 76. On retiring from medicine, Brian took up oil pastels and painting, creating many colourful expressionist works featuring people, community life and townscapes. A park bench in Palmerston North's Victoria Esplanade honours Brian's long commitment to the community.

Frank Davis (1934-1983) was a lecturer in the art department of Palmerston North Teachers’ College. He went on to become head of the department from 1968 until his death in 1983. Frank’s “Rose City Mural” – completed in 1982 – remains in its original location on an exterior wall on the Palmerston North Civic Administration Building (corner of Main Street and The Square).

All works in this month’s exhibition are available to purchase – Arohanui Hospice will receive 100% of the proceeds of sale.
