NZTrio He Taonga Wairere add a deeper hue with the addition of viola and double bass to perform Franz Schubert’s ebullient and beloved Trout Quintet.
There is barely a cloud that passes over this unfailing lyrical and summery delight, allowing every instrument the opportunity to shine.
The programme is balanced by Gareth Farr’s incendiary Ahi and Thousandth Orange for piano trio and viola by Caroline Shaw.
Of the latter, Shaw writes: I began thinking about the history of still-life paintings. Those bowls of fruit we see framed in museums – sort of lovely and banal, at first glance, but then richer when considered in the long story of humans painting things that they see, over and over and over again… More angles reveal themselves – more perspectives and corners and stories, more understanding – more appreciation of something that most would consider unremarkable.
