Experience an unforgettable journey into the spectacular Kaimanawa Ranges, home of New Zealand's heritage wild Kaimanawa horses.

Your adventure begins at the Waiouru Army Camp Sports Grounds, where there is ample parking and toilet facilities. Before departure, Army Range Control personnel will provide a health and safety briefing, followed by an introduction from the Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Welfare Society Inc. (KHH), sharing the history of the Kaimanawa horses and the work the charity undertakes to protect their welfare and maintain a healthy, sustainable herd.

You'll then board one of our comfortable buses for a guided tour through the normally restricted military training area and surrounding conservation land. Travelling along rugged backcountry roads, there will be opportunities to stop whenever horses are sighted or when Department of Conservation and New Zealand Army representatives share the fascinating history, ecology and management of this unique landscape. These stops provide excellent opportunities to photograph the horses in their natural environment.

The journey continues through picturesque valleys and climbs to spectacular viewpoints overlooking Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe before arriving at the historic muster yards in the Argo Valley. Here you'll have time to relax beside the beautiful Moawhango River and enjoy your own picnic lunch.

This exclusive experience offers rare access to land that is normally closed to the public. KHH is granted access for just three days each year as a fundraiser, with all proceeds supporting the welfare, care and rehoming of Kaimanawa horses.
