‘Korori, Korora’ exhibition
Whakarongo ki te manu korori, korora. Korerotia no tuawhakarere.
Listen to the birds of the land and sea, who speak to us from many years ago.
A dynamic exhibition on Aotearoa’s native birds, featuring diverse artistic mediums, focusing particularly on the birds of the Manawatū Estuary; celebrating both their ecological importance and cultural significance to Māori.
Korori, Korora also incorporates the Te Papa Buller’s Birds: The Art of Keulemans and Buchanan exhibition, showcasing prints of illustrations from New Zealand’s most famous books on native birds. A highlight of Buller’s Birds is the work of Dutch artist Johannes Gerardus Keulemans, which is very relevant for the Dutch community and supporters at Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom.
This collaborative exhibition features exquisite work from:
- Maungarongo (Ron) Te Kawa, a takatāpui fabric artist, educator, and storyteller of Ngāti Porou descent, whose vibrant textile work draws upon rich cultural narratives.
- Robert Scotcher, a UK-born wildlife photographer now based in Te Awahou, Foxton, whose photography captures the natural beauty and behaviour of New Zealand’s birdlife.
- Michael Angelo, a Ngāti Kahungunu carver and painter, renowned for his vibrant wooden murals and paintings that reflect his perspective intersection of Māori tradition and spirituality.
- A special feature of the exhibition is the voice of local tamariki (children), who provide a fresh and imaginative perspective on the native birds of their surroundings.
These artworks connect historical representations with modern perspectives, making it a vibrant experience for all ages.
Free entry, all welcome.
‘Korori, Korora’ exhibition opens to the public Sunday 24 November and runs until the end of February 2025 at the Māpuna, Kabinet Art Gallery in Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom, 91 Main St, Foxton.
