Arrive 10am for a cuppa and a prompt 10.30am start.
Calling all home gardeners and people on lifestyle blocks and farms who want to learn more about how to grow their own trees for food, fuel, fibre, amenity, biodiversity and timber. This month's event focuses on food! Visit behind the scenes at Edible Garden, a long-running nursery supplying quality fruit and nut trees and berry crops. Owner Sarah Frater is a very experienced grower and offers an excellent range of trees.
We will start by hearing Sarah's advice about planning an orchard, covering vital points such as how to choose species, varieties, cross-pollination, choosing planting spots and accurately calculating how many trees you can fit into your space. We'll then move onto a discussion about fruit tree pests and diseases and how to prevent or treat.
Finally, Sarah will give us a tour of the nursery and discuss of what's new, what's great and her favourites. There'll be lots of opportunity for experienced Tree Croppers to add their recommendations too.
You can browse the latest Edible Garden catalogue here https://ediblegarden.co.nz/application/files/1217/4532/6358/Edible_Garden_2025_WEB.pdf - contact Sarah via the website if you want to order in advance and collect on the day (note that open grown trees won't have been lifted yet).
We'll wrap up by 1pm but there's space to stay on and eat your lunch and continue the korero with other friendly Tree Croppers. For those who want to make a day excursion of it, you may like to continue onto Cross Hills Nursery.
Bring:
Your lunch, a water bottle and mug. Tea and coffee and chat supplied!
