An unforgettable evening of storytelling from the coldest place on Earth. The New Zealand Antarctic Society is proud to invite you to a presentation by Lawrie Cairns and a curated selection of captivating short films from the heart of Antarctica.
The films blend stunning documentary footage, curated by award-winning filmmaker Anthony Powell, that reveals the continent’s stark beauty, unforgiving conditions, climate change, and penguin antics with stories captured by inventive and funny entries from the Winter International Film Festival of Antarctica’s 48-Hour Challenge, an annual showcase of creativity and resilience from those who winter-over on the Ice.
But before the films, we'll hear from Lawrie Cairns and the changes he observed over the timespan of 25 years, in technology, work and the people. Lawrie had four trips down to the Ice as a Surveyor for the Lands & Survey Department during summer field seasons of 1971-72, 1972-73, 1982-83 and 1996-97. working in the Dry Valleys, on the ice shelf and at Cape Adare. He was working there with dogs, helicopters, icebreakers and other interesting Antarcticans.
