Three wetland herbs that are rare elsewhere in the region have been found at Pukepuke. Cabbage trees, flax and toetoe grow on the edges, along with sedges and rushes. Over 60 species of wetland birds reside here, and a hide built at the lake edge provides excellent opportunities for bird watching. Pukepuke is also home to a large population of short-finned eel, as well as long-finned eel, inanga, frogs and introduced goldfish. Keys to the bird viewing hide are available upon request. Parking is recommended for four wheel drive vehicles only.
Note: Visitors to Pukepuke Conservation area need an access permit, which is available at no cost from the Department of Conservation.
