Te Motu o Poutoa was traditionally a strategic strong hold and pā site for Rangitāne to gather or retreat to in times of need. The length of occupation is often retold in the oral histories, one of the few that date from before the arrival of Europeans in this area. This site was quarried to rebuild residential sites such as Summerhill Drive. Before these developments, Te Motu o Poutoa would have stood 15 metres above the current flat surfaces.
Standing upon the ledge of Anzac Park, where Te Motu o Poutoa was once located you can understand why a pā site would be located here. With views of the Manawatū river, nearby pā, across the vastness of the rohe and as far as Mt Ruapehu on a clear day.
