At 6 metres tall, Whatonga is a contemporary steel sculpture which sits at the top/halfway point of the Tawa Loop Track. It depicts historical seafarer and Rangitāne chief Whatonga, who was one which journeyed across the Pacific Ocean to Aotearoa, New Zealand possibly as early as the 12th century. The Ngai Tara and Rangitāne trace their descent from Whatonga.
