The Bed Barn: a business built on teamwork and longevity

The Bed Barn: a business built on teamwork and longevity

Since its founding in 1988, The Bed Barn has been a cornerstone of the Manawatū business community. A proudly local operation, the company continues to craft high-quality beds and mattresses in Palmerston North, prioritising comfort, craftsmanship, and community. But beyond its products, The Bed Barn’s real strength lies in its people—staff who have been with the company for decades, reflecting a workplace culture that fosters loyalty, stability, and a shared commitment to excellence.

Combined experience of over 70 years

In an era where job-hopping is common, The Bed Barn stands out for its exceptional staff retention. Many of its team members have been with the company for over a decade—Chris for 36 years, Sami for 22 years, Colin for 14 years, and Angie for 5 years. Their long tenures speak volumes about the work environment Andrei and Rose Ogrean have nurtured since taking over the business 2.5 years ago.

“Our team’s experience and dedication allow us to maintain the highest quality while meeting demand,” says Andrei. “We truly are a family, and that’s reflected in the care we put into every bed. The loyalty of our staff shows that The Bed Barn isn’t just a place to work—it’s a place to grow and belong.”

Business is a collaborative effort

The Bed Barn doesn’t just retain staff—it actively invests in them. Training, mentorship, and fostering a sense of pride in craftsmanship ensure that employees feel valued and motivated. The company’s emphasis on teamwork extends beyond its walls, too. It sources materials locally whenever possible, strengthening ties within the community. The wooden drawers in their bed bases, for example, are crafted by Tweakit Joinery, a connection made through the Palmerston North chapter of BNI, a national business networking group.

Growing while staying true to core values

Since taking the reins, Andrei and Rose have implemented strategic changes to enhance business operations, including consolidating retail and manufacturing under one roof at 667 Tremaine Avenue. They also established an advisory board composed of respected local business leaders, ensuring The Bed Barn continues on a strong growth path. Their efforts have been recognised, earning them a Highly Commended at the 2024 Yorb Business Awards.

While expansion plans are in motion—with potential stores in Whanganui and Levin—The Bed Barn remains steadfast in its commitment to local manufacturing. “Keeping production in Palmerston North allows us to uphold our quality standards and offer a one-year comfort trial—a promise that makes a real difference to our customers,” Andrei explains.

A model for great employers

With a workforce that defies industry turnover trends, The Bed Barn offers a compelling case study for businesses looking to foster employee loyalty. By prioritising respect, professional development, and a strong team culture, the company has created an environment where staff want to stay.

For other employers, there’s a lesson to be learned: investing in people isn’t just good for business—it’s what builds a lasting legacy. As The Bed Barn continues to grow, it remains a shining example of how a business can thrive when it puts its people first.
