Manawatu Steam Madness

Bring the whole family out to travel with the Steam Incorporated as we traverse the Manawatū Gorge, taking in the sights of the rarely seen river, now inaccessible by road. Board at Feilding or Palmerston North and head through to Woodville, hauled by a combination of steam and diesel motive power! The best of both worlds!

‘The Gorge’ is an interesting geographical location, linking the Manawatū and Hawkes Bay regions, and dividing the Ruahine and Tararua Ranges. The railway line through here was completed in 1891 and has since held itself as a vital transport link through the area. The road through here, once forming part of State Highway 3, has a chequered history of closures due to land subsidence. The most recent of which was in 2017, when authorities decided to close the scenic road for good, fast forward to the present day and work is underway to construct a new route through the area.

At Woodville, take an hour to see the delights of the restored 1960s era station whilst our train is prepared for the run back to Wellington. Meridian’s Te Apiti wind farm can also be seen from the station, occupying 1,150ha of land, with enough sustainable renewable energy to power 45,000 kiwi homes.

We can cater for larger group bookings - these are best dealt with directly through us by emailing [email protected] or contacting 0800 783 264.
