Welcome to Matatau 2023, the annual show where students graduating from the Bachelor of Māori Visual Arts at Toioho ki Āpiti, Massey University, exhibit their finished works. See sculpture, painting and other media from the cutting edge of Māori artistic practice.
“Matatau” means “proficiency” or “mastery”, but also the understanding gained through perceptual and conceptual insight. Students reflect this by engaging with customary Māori ideas of mana tangata to explore personal identity and issues of social, environmental, economic, and political importance.
