A perfect place to build a business and a life

A PERFECT PLACE TO BUILD A BUSINESS AND A LIFE

We sat down with Tom and Lisa Driffill, the owners of Narley Construction Limited, to learn more about what it’s like to run a thriving business in Manawatū. From the strong sense of community support and their commitment to a positive work culture, to the joys of balancing business with family life, Tom and Lisa share their insights on why Manawatū is the perfect place to live, work, and enjoy.

What inspired you to settle and build your life in Manawatū?

We both grew up in rural settings – Tom in Rangiwahia and Lisa in Halcombe – so the rural life is in our blood. Manawatū offers the perfect blend of country charm and community spirit, making it the ideal place to raise our three girls, along with our dog Zoey, while pursuing our passion for building. We’ve lived here for nearly a decade and can’t imagine being anywhere else.

Why did you choose to start your business, Narley Construction Limited, in Manawatū?

After 10 years of working for others, Tom was eager to start his own company. Manawatū’s supportive community and thriving construction industry made it a no-brainer for us. We knew this region would be a fantastic place to grow our business, thanks to the strong demand for custom homes and the friendly, welcoming environment.

How has the community influenced your business journey?

The Manawatū community has been incredible. From the local schools, like Colyton School where our girls go, to the business networks, we’ve always felt supported. Tom’s involvement with the Registered Master Builders’ executive committee has also been a great way to stay connected and informed about the industry. We truly feel part of a larger family here.

How would you describe the team culture at Narley Construction?

We’re passionate about what we do, and that passion extends to how we treat our team. We approach every build as if it were our own home, and we believe that positivity is key. Our workplace is vibrant, happy, and solution-focused, which is reflected both in the office and on-site. The team knows their roles, are excited about the projects, and are constantly learning with each build.

We also make time to spend together off the job site, which gives the team a chance to unwind, bond, and have fun outside of work. Whether it’s karting, playing golf at Orlando Country, or enjoying other activities around Manawatū, we make sure our team has opportunities to relax and enjoy each other’s company. It’s more than just a job for us and our team.

What do you love most about running your business in Manawatū?

The best part of our job is handing the keys to our clients’ new homes. It’s a magical moment that never gets old. Manawatū’s community spirit makes these moments even more special because we’re building homes for people we often see around town, at the local café, or on one of our amazing walking trails.

Do you feel that Manawatū is a good place to start or expand a business?

Absolutely. Manawatū is a thriving region, with plenty of development and new subdivisions popping up in Feilding and Palmerston North. While the construction sector has slowed a bit recently, the community’s resilience and the region’s affordability make it an excellent place for new businesses. Plus, the people here are incredibly supportive, which makes all the difference.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced, and how has Manawatū helped you overcome them?

The rising cost of building materials and tighter budgets have been challenges, especially with the current economic climate. However, being part of the Manawatū community means we have access to a wealth of knowledge and support through networks like the Registered Master Builders. The collaboration and shared insights within the industry here help us navigate these tougher times.

How has Manawatū’s location benefited your family and lifestyle?

We love the abundance of outdoor activities in Manawatū. The scenery is beautiful, and the people are vibrant and friendly. Everything is so central and easy to get around, which makes it simple to get our kids to all the activities they’re into. Our girls are active in dance, tennis, and netball, and Manawatū offers fantastic opportunities for them to pursue these activities.

What’s your take on the lifestyle in Manawatū?

The lifestyle here is unbeatable. We can enjoy all our favourite activities – running, mountain biking, and spending time with friends and family – right here in Manawatū. The people are friendly, the schools are fantastic, and the community is welcoming. It’s a thriving region that offers everything we need for both our business and personal lives.
