A Day Out With the Kids | Manawatū Itinerary

A DAY OUT WITH THE KIDS
IN MANAWATŪ

Manawatū time runs nice and easy, with pretty much no traffic and lots of great things to do – ideal for a day out with the kids.

Duration:

4 days

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Indoor
- Outdoor
- Adventure
- Feilding

DAY 1.

More than just trampolines at Cloud 9
Cloud 9 Trampoline Park

Indoor

CLOUD 9 + TE MANAWA + PIZZA

Manawatū offers a variety of indoor activities if the kids are getting cabin fever and the weather isn't playing the game. Located in the city you'll find Cloud 9 and Te Manawa where you can spend hours having fun. Hop to Cloud 9, complete with a full-sized Olympic trampoline, climbing wall, and ninja assault course. With nibbles and coffee for you to re-energize (while the kids burn OFF their energy), it is a happy place for all and caters for all ages.

If the kids still have energy after Cloud 9, pop down to Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science and History. There's plenty of fun to be had with the New Zealand Rugby Museum on the second floor, and the Museums extensive exhibitions provide plenty of hands-on activities.

For a bite after the morning activities head along the square to locally owned and family-friendly Cafe Cuba, for great food, a variety of beverages, and outstanding service.

OUTDOOR

A DAY AT HIMATANGI + ICE CREAM

A day at the beach isn't a hard sell. Especially if it's an easy 30-minute drive from Palmerston North city. This quant seaside town is complete with an adventure park, skate park, and BMX track! Pop into the local store for fish n' chips and ice cream, or explore the largest sand dune field in the southern hemisphere. On your way pop into Waireka Honey Centre on State Highway One for homemade honey ice creams. Bellies full, happy faces, sandy feet - this is what winning feels like.

OR... VICTORIA ESPLANADE + WALK

The perfect day out can be easily found in Palmerston North city. Victoria Esplanade has a bit of everything. There are kids climbing trees, waving as the miniature train whistles by; people sprawled out on the grass with picnics, kids exploring the multiple playgrounds on offer, and with the recent addition of the Junior Road Safety Park, it's becoming a buzzing spot in the heart of the city. Grab a coffee at Cafe Esplanade before checking out the bird aviaries, paddling pool, or explore the WildBase Recovery Centre and visit the resident animals.

Alongside visiting the Victoria Esplanade, the popular Manawatū River Pathway is a must-visit and is perfect for bikes, scooters, pushchairs, and skateboards! It's a shared dog-friendly pathway so bring the furbaby along for the ride.

Adventure

TAWA LOOP TRACK + THE HERB FARM CAFE

Even if you have to bribe them, the Tawa Loop walk at Te Āpiti - Manawatū Gorge is a must do family walk. Aside from the scenery and greenery, the flourishing birdlife and the mighty Whatonga sculpture at the top, this 4km loop track is well-maintained and just the right distance for kids to enjoy.

Next, head to Ashhurst to fuel up at The Herb Farm Cafe, which serves beautiful meals in gorgeous surrounds. Let the kids explore the 14 themed gardens where sightings of fairies, gnomes and elves are a common occurrence.

FEILDING

THE COACH MUSEUM + LIONS MINI GOLF
OR
MAKINO AQUATIC CENTRE + FEILDING MARKET

Head over to friendly Feilding, just a short trip away and you can spend the whole day there. The vintage tractors and ropemaking at The Coach House Museum offer a fascinating glimpse into rural New Zealand life that's as interactive as it is informative. Afterwards, The Lions Mini Golf course is the perfect family fun activity, it's super fun and caters for all ages.

To fuel up before trekking back into the city Rosebowl is an iconic spot, popular among Feilding locals, and great for kids. While you feast on an Eggs Benedict the kids can have their own kids-sized variation. With delicious food, great coffee and a friendly atmosphere Rosebowl is a must-try.

On Fridays follow the smell of delicious food to the town centre and visit the award winning Feilding Farmers Market. This award-winning market features stunning artisan products such as cheeses, meats, fresh baking and more to fuel the whole family for their day and beyond. In the afternoon, the free inflatables at Makino Aquatic Centre are another reason Feilding makes for a great family day out, with a mix of indoor and outdoor pools it's perfect rain or shine.

To finish off the day Kowhai Park offers something for everyone, complete with a new playground, big bird aviaries and a duck pond which offer hours of fun and the perfect end to a well-rounded day out.
