SEVEN OF THE BEST: WORKING OUT IN PALMERSTON NORTH

When it comes to getting sweaty in Palmerston North, there's a studio, sports centre, or scenic stroll to suit all fitness types. From yoga bunnies to gym junkies, marathon runners to dog walkers – chuck your activewear on, turn up the tunes and get set to get fit!

1. H.I.I.T FITNESS

If you’re hunting for a high-intensity workout to fit into your workday lunch hour, then hit up H.I.I.T Fitness,. Located on the corner of Main and Princess Streets, the gym is open every day of the week and offers a range of group fitness sessions, including the local’s favourite a 30-minute lunch time body blitz class. Throughout the day they run bootcamps, boxfit and jiu jitsu classes for adults as well as kids. Just in case you needed some extra motivation, gym owner Richard has an adorable pug called Pablo who sometimes joins in on the workouts! 

OPEN MONDAY TO FRIDAY 6AM – 9PM, SATURDAY & SUNDAY 7AM – 7PM.

Tip: If you work in the city, turn your lunchtime into crunch-time  with a 30-minute midday body blitz class

2. RUNNING ALONG THE MANAWATŪ RIVER AND HE ARA KOTAHI PATHWAYS

Nothing beats getting active in the great outdoors, especially when you’re surrounded by top-notch views! Whether you’re a running fanatic or a casual jogger, set your own pace and create your own workout along the Manawatū River and He Ara Kotahi Pathways. Meandering along the awa, the Manawatū River Pathway connects up with He Ara Kotahi Pathway, making for a 16.8km run from one end to the other - the ideal half-marathon training! For a shorter jog or walk –,or to set your new PB, take on the Fitzherbert Avenue Bridge to He Ara Kotahi Bridge Loop (3.8km). 

Tip: Both pathways are dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friends along for the fun! 

3. Te Arapiki a Tāne - The Stairway of Tāne

When you want to combine fitness, the great outdoors and spectacular views, then Te Arapiki a Tāne should be your destination.

Close to 600 steps take you down the cliffside reserve to the Manawatū River on a steep and challenging trail... then go back up!

4. REFORMER PILATES AT STUDIO RUBIX

Usually, the idea of waking up before 6am would be enough to send us straight back under the covers, that is until you add reformer pilates at Studio Rubix to your morning routine. Palmy locals from all walks of life convene at the King Street studio to experience a modern take on the traditional gym vibe. Opt for a reformer pilates class, get 1-on-1 expertise with a personal trainer or cleanse your diet with nutrition consulting.

Is the entire office keen to jump on the fitness buzz? Studio Rubix also caters for corporate groups with private one-off or regular team-building exercise sessions on offer.

5. F45 PALMERSTON NORTH

F45 offers sweat sessions that fit perfectly into your daily routine, – their signature full body, high intensity 45 minute workouts having taken Palmy by storm. With an international cult following, the fitness classes are a combination of high intensity interval training, functional training and circuit training. In other words, they’re an absolute killer! The F45 Palmerston North studio is located on Cuba Street, and their first class of the day kicks-off at 5.15am. Download their handy app to check out timetables and make class bookings. 

OPEN 5AM – 7PM MONDAY TO FRIDAY, 6.30AM – 10.15AM SATURDAY.

Tip: Once you’ve downed your protein shake, Sublime Coffee Roasters is two doors down, swing in after class and treat yourself to a much-needed reward.

6. ZENITH FITNESS

If you want a gym that’s a one-stop-shop for all your fitness needs, then Zenith Fitness is the place for you. Located on Tremaine Avenue, this 24-hour gym has eight different workout areas to suit all types of fitness seekers. The gym also offers Les Mills group fitness classes, including all your favourites – RPM, Body Pump, Grit Strength, Body Combat, Body Step and Body Balance. They also offer boxing and yoga classes. 

OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY MONDAY TO SUNDAY.
