Hi-Tech winners NovoLabs highlight manawatū as a burgeoning tech hub

When you think of cutting-edge technology and groundbreaking innovation, your mind might drift to bustling metropolises like Auckland or Wellington. However, NovoLabs, a startup from Palmerston North, is proving that world-class innovation thrives in Manawatū. With three awards from the recent New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards, NovoLabs has not only put itself on the map but has also highlighted the Manawatū region as a burgeoning hub of technological excellence.

National recognition at the New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards

For NovoLabs, the triumph at the New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards was as thrilling as it was unexpected. Competing against over 250 companies from across the country, the Palmerston North born tech enterprise secured more awards than any other entrant. "It was really an honour," says Andy Shilton, founder and driving force behind NovoLabs.

But beyond the accolades, these awards have shone a spotlight on the Manawatū region, demonstrating that significant technological advancements are not confined to New Zealand's larger cities. “We were under the radar, being in a region rather than a big city,” Andy notes. The awards have elevated NovoLabs’ profile, showcasing what’s happening in the regions and attracting interest from investors eager to be part of their journey.

From university research to global tech giant

NovoLabs’ story began in an unexpected place: a tertiary course on fluid hydraulics at Massey University, where Andy Shilton, then a professor of Environmental Engineering, was inspired to innovate. His expertise in environmental and pollution control led to the development of a novel approach to water flow, utilising ultraviolet (UV) light in a way that had never been done before. This breakthrough idea was the foundation of what would become NovoLabs.

In 2022, NovoLabs operated out of a small shed behind the University with just a couple of staff. Two years on, the company now boasts a modern facility near the Palmerston North airport, within Te Utanganui – the Central New Zealand Distribution Hub, and has expanded its team to include 8 to 10 staff members. With over 30 UV modules sold into commercial applications and more than 1.5 billion litres of water disinfected since their inception, NovoLabs is transitioning from a startup to a growth company with global ambitions.

“The potential is massive,” Andy explains. “It’s a matter of balancing growth - pushing hard enough to capitalise on opportunities without overextending.” As NovoLabs scales, they envision becoming a major player in the global market, with large export volumes.

Pioneering innovation with an international impact

NovoLabs’ core innovation - an entirely new method of introducing UV light into liquids - has set them apart in a competitive market. While the UV market is worth around $8 billion a year, most companies are building similar products to each other. NovoLabs’ unique approach, however, required them to innovate from the ground up, which, though challenging, has led to significant advantages.

Their technology enables the disinfection of liquids without chemicals or excessive power use, offering a cheaper, more sustainable alternative to existing methods. The impact is far-reaching, with potential applications in agriculture, horticulture, dairy farming, and beyond.

Why Manawatū is the perfect base for innovation

Manawatū offers unique advantages that larger cities simply can’t match. It’s centrally located, making it a logistics hub, and is big enough to provide all the necessary resources and networks while still being manageable and accessible. This proximity to subcontractors, fabricators, and their own team has allowed NovoLabs to maintain the highest quality standards, which Andy sees as critical, especially in the early stages of the business.

The future of Manawatū is looking bright

Looking ahead, Andy is optimistic about the future of tech innovation in Manawatū. NovoLabs has already exceeded initial expectations, and Andy envisions a future where they grow into a massive company, employing hundreds and making a significant global impact.

NovoLabs is looking forward to continuing to nurture the local talent pipeline. Providing opportunities for local graduates and professionals to work in a cutting-edge industry without leaving the region, further enhancing the Manawatū’s appeal as a destination for investment.

For those considering where to base their startup, Andy has no hesitation in recommending Manawatū. “It’s got everything you need, and it’s easy to do business and live here,” he says. With its combination of resources, accessibility, and community support, Manawatū is the perfect place to nurture innovation and achieve global success.
